Race Reports MAXX Formula 2019 – Zandvoort

On 21. May 2019
The inaugural race weekend of the newly founded MAXX Formula series took place in the occasion of the “Max Verstappen – Jumbo Racedagen” in Zandvoort/Netherlands! More than 100.000 enthusiastic racing fans attended one of the biggest motorsport events in Europe to meet their hero Max Verstappen and follow the various racing series throughout the weekend. The newly established MAXX Formula series with the biggest variety of the most powerful single seaters ever built followed the invitation by the event organizer and showed their cars and drivers for the first time to the public.

After a clean and incident-free FP1 and FP2, the results showed a clear picture of who will dominate the 2 weekend races in the three different classes: It was Karlheinz Becker, the German racing legend, who showed the best performance and lap times in the Masters Class followed by the two rookies Michael and Felix Grosse-Aschhoff (both GER). Unfortunately Jürgen Lohmanns (GER) had to retire his Worldseries by Nissan already in FP1 due to a mechanical failure and he was not able to get the car back on track again. The Advance Class was dominated by Christopher Brenier (FRA) with his impressive V12 Superleague Formula. One of the two lady-drivers of MAXX Formula, Veronika Cicha from Czech Republic, got up to pace from the first lap despite the fact, that she never raced in Zandvoort before. It was therefore no surprise that she performed the second-best lap time in her Class in FP1 and FP2, followed by her female-contender Bianca Steiner from Austria. Anton Werner, the German pilot excited the crowd with the appearance of his Indy Car and he completed the Advance Class ranking with P4.

The Prestige Class line-up was definitely a tasty tidbit for all Formula 1 fans. The local hero Klaas Zwart with his Jaguar R5, the young Austrian pilot Bernd Herndlhofer with the original Arrows A22, formerly driven by Jos Verstappen, and last but not least Wolfgang Jaksch, who showed up with a completely rebuilt Sauber C29 from the year 2010. Klaas Zwart`s appearance was coined by his motivation to attack the existing official lap record of Max Verstappen. After a 1:23.9 in FP1, followed by a 1:20.9 in qualifying, he felt confident to catch the record in the race if he would be able to get a free lap. Bernd Herndlhofer became the unlucky hero of the weekend. His Arrows A22 made it through FP1, FP2 and also in the Qualifying he could manage to place the car on P2. Due to technical problems he did not start from the grid in Race 1 and followed the cars after the start from the pitlane. While chasing the field his car suffered from a major engine failure and his race weekend was already over before passing the finish line for the first time. Bad luck also for Wolfgang Jaksch with his Sauber C29. After a successful installation lap in FP2, the car lost hydraulic pressure at the beginning of the Qualifying and the crew decided to retire the car as it was too risky to continue and eventually create more damage. The attempt of Klaas Zwart to catch the lap record got ruined in Race 1 due to a huge oil slick in the last corner from the previous race. In Race 2 a safety car session, caused by an accident of Michael Grosse-Aschhoff again disrupted his attempt and he missed the benchmark after the restart just slightly. After the race he got disqualified due to prohibited overtaking of the safety car.

MAXX Formula Racing Series with its friendly, open and accessible philosophy as well as with a second to none line-up of all kind of powerful Formula cars will definitely draw a lot of attention in the nearest future. The countless fans in Zandvoort could experience the action at close quarters! Next MAXX Formula event will be from July 5th to July 7th at Slovakia Ring (SVK) in the event of the FIA Truck Grand prix. The modern racetrack close to Bratislava will, for the first time ever, host an official race of the big open single seater scene.
